Desserts

Desserts really do make the best ending to every meal, and also the beginning. I'm not one to judge!

Blueberry Lemon Breakfast Cake

I’m not much of a breakfast person, but I love a good brunch. The fact that I can have savory and sweet treats on one plate AND not have to roll out of bed before 10? Sign me up!

Vegan Key Lime Pie

I dragged my boyfriend to KCRW’s annual Pie Contest at UCLA this past weekend and now I am in a sugar coma. Please send help.

Vegan Hawaiian Sweet Rolls

Summer is sadly coming to an end, and I’m trying to soak up the last of daylight savings time before it disappears forever. This weekend was primarily spent getting our coop and brooder ready for the new babies we’ll be getting soon (yay!), but I did manage to get a bit of cooking in somehow. We went to a vegan pot luck on Sunday and I was a little stumped on what to bring. I see cooking vegan as a fun challenge in creativity, so I jumped in head first and didn’t look back….

Spruce Tip Shortbread

On a recent trip up to our neighbors in Canada, I was fascinated by all the beautiful spruce trees around where we were staying. I remember vaguely watching some chef documentary a while back where they used spruce tips in their cooking and really wanted to try to it out. I’m all about forgaing for random edibles, but I wasn’t entirely sure how to tell which type of tree was which….

Carrot Ginger Cake with Cream Cheese Frosting

Ah, the carrot cake. The only cake that I can eat 4 slices of without feeling completely guilty about it. It has plenty of vegetables in it, so in my opinion it’s basically a salad!…

Meyer Lemon Meringue Tart

When I’m putting together a relatively dense holiday meal, I like to keep the dessert light and tangy whenever possible. For Christmas Eve this year, I made Sous Vide Leg of Lamb along with Roasted Harissa Carrots and Scalloped Potatoes. Heavy, heavier, and heaviest. If we were going to have dessert after all those carbs and protein, I knew it would need to be something to cut through the dense flavors of the night’s dishes….

Sugar Cookies with Buttercream Frosting

Decorating Mama T’s famous Holiday sugar cookies has been a tradition in my family before I could even say the word “butter”. Every year, my Mom whips out about four dozen of these bad boys and we go to town on making the most interesting frosting colors to decorate our cookies with. The highlight of this year was our Millennial Pink frosting, which I believe was aptly named. …

Sweet Potato Rolls with Rosemary Maple Glaze

Sweet Potato Buns with Rosemary Maple Glaze
When it comes to last minute dinner parties, typically I’m the one rushing to the grocery store, flying around the kitchen, and yelling at the boys to clean up their respective messes before everyone arrives. Thankfully this weekend I got to experience the other side of dinner parties: being the guest! …

Pumpkin Pie Bites

Fall is really here! In Southern California, fall usually means pumpkin spice lattes at Starbucks coupled with 90+ degree weather. However, my favorite season finally made its wonderful appearance this week as temperatures cooled down to a much more bearable 70 degrees during the day (absolutely freezing, I know). This new + improved – and decidedly more seasonally appropriate – temperature has already made me start craving all things pumpkin and Thanksgiving themed. I blame the weather for the many pumpkin recipes that I will be posting this week. Prepare your stomachs….

Summer Fig + Honey Tea Cake

If you happened to peruse my last post about my new fig obsession {Fig, Caramelized Onion + Goat Cheese Tart}, you’ll already be in the know about my stealthy acquisition of some of my neighbors’ figs. Now that I have access to so many of them, you could say I’ve become a bit fig crazed. For many, the fig is an acquired taste. They’re only ripe for a short amount of time, usually insanely overpriced, not easy to find, and frankly a bit weird. If you are lucky enough to have access to a fig tree, you don’t have to worry about most of these drawbacks. Hence, my fig insanity.
